Film Classification Print Email

Australian law requires that all films screened for public exhibition are classified by the Australian Classification Board.

Along with classification there are laws and regulations which govern the playing of films, the playing of trailers, the display of film advertising materials, the types of classification information that must be displayed, the age at which patrons may be admitted to public screenings of films and the type of films that can be shown in public screenings.

Independent Cinemas Australia worked with the classification board by consulting on issues which affect cinemas and passing on information and updates.

The consultation on the changes to markings has now closed and the Classification (Publications, Films and Computer Games) (Markings and Consumer Advice) Determination 2014 is in effect. Further information about the new markings requirements is available here.
